Reflections on Color and Printmaking is a series of focused interviews with contemporary artists who work with color and printmaking.

Through this concise lens, each participating artist shares unique insights about color regarding its material qualities, conceptual aspects, theoretical grounding, psychological influences, and cultural underpinnings in relation to their own work. The voice of each individual artist is an emphasis of this series. Each interview is comprised of a set of pre-selected questions. The artist provides their own answers to these questions, and the editing process of each interview is minimal.

Reflections on Color and Printmaking was created by printmaker, professor, and artist Laura Crehuet Berman. The inspiration for this series emerged with the conjunction of two things: designing and teaching the “Color in Printmaking” course at Kansas City Art Institute (where Berman has taught since 2002) and hosting visiting artist Althea Murphy-Price in this class for an eye-opening look into how color plays a constant and inspiring role in her work.

Berman’s own work has a focus on color through materiality, context, and research. She is endlessly fascinated with how artists see, feel, and understand color in their work. For Berman, this project underscores the idea that color rarely exists in isolation.

In 2024, Berman will work as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Canberra (Australia) to further her color and printmaking research. .
